VENTURA ALVAREZ SALA Gijon (1869 / 1919) "Blacksmiths", 1899

Oil on canvas Signed and dated in the lower right corner The painting was cropped on the far left where another blacksmith had been. In 1868 Alvarez Sala painted The Raffle of the Xata, which he gave to the Gijon Casino and which he sent that same year to the National Exhibition of Fine Arts along with the work we are auctioning. Blacksmiths was awarded the gold medal at the 1899 Regional Exhibition in Gijon and chosen as the poster for the competition.
