CESARE FRANCHI, "IL POLLINO"

(Perugia, ?, - Roma, Italia, h. 1598)

CESARE FRANCHI, "IL POLLINO" (Perugia, ?, - Rome, Italy, c. 1598) "Exaltation of the Name of Jesus"

Tempera and gold on parchment. Framed in embroidered fabric with floral decoration and housed in a cornucopia of carved and gilded wood in the Baroque style. A large number of drawings by "Pollino" are known, illustrating his high quality as a draughtsman in various public and private collections in Europe and America. His miniatures, on the other hand, are rare and precious, much more difficult to find. This part of his production is limited to a dozen works, five of which are preserved in the Galleria Nazionalle dell' Umbria in Perugia; which makes this example a very special collector's item. Elena de Laurentis compares this miniature with another on the same subject held in the British Library in London, highlighting its quality and refined technique, in which the artist makes abundant use of gold and lapis lazuli, creating a detailed work conceived as a small painting. The study carried out by Elena de Laurentis, dated April 24, 2017, is attached. Dimensions: 9.5 x 9 cm. Frame: 20 x 20 cm.
