CASTO PLASENCIA Cañizar, Guadalajara (1846) / Madrid (1890)

Oil on canvas. Signed at the bottom. Reference bibliography: VV.AA., "Casa de America: rehabilitation of the Linares Palace. Madrid. Fifth Centenary", Barcelona, 1992. Sketch of the main hall of the Linares Palace in Madrid, commissioned from Casto Plasencia by the building's owner, Jose Maria Murga y Reolid (1833-1902), Marquis of Linares and Viscount of Llanteno. On the canvas, marked with a subtle grid for the transfer of proportions, we find the god Mercury, with the caduceus and petasos, leading Psyche to meet the other Olympian gods, who are depicted in the lower register contemplating the scene. Psyche, Cupid's wife, embodies the poetic allegory of the soul and is depicted according to traditional iconography, with butterfly wings. Dimensions: 168 x 113 cm
