Stools are a minor art form for the Tchokwe, who are best known for their impressive masks and figurines. The chief's stool shows a female figure seated with her elbows on her knees and the seat above her head, a pose commonly used to represent ancestral spirits in the artistic vocabulary of the Tchokwe and related peoples. This posture is associated with elders, people who have deep thoughts, and also with the burial position of chiefs and important members of the community.
