Lot 577
(S. XV)
FOLLOWER OF DIERIC BOUTS Flanders (15th century) / (16th century) "Imago Salvatoris Coronati"
Oil on canvas. On the reverse, a label from the Board of Delegation for the Protection and Salvation of Artistic Treasures (inventory no. 10116, provenance: Oliva, collection no. 32). Provenance: - Collection of the Count of Oliva. Dieric Bouts created this image of Christ, which combines the iconography of the "Salvator Mundi" with that of the "Ecce Homo." It was very successful in its time and was reproduced in his own workshop and also by his followers, often paired with an image of Our Lady of Sorrows, sometimes as a diptych. The face of Christ, with eyes reddened by suffering, rendered with meticulous detail, shows the religious sentimentality and sensitivity characteristic of Bouts and the Flemish Primitives. It comes with an important 19th-century Italian frame of stained bone and imitation tortoiseshell, based on the designs of Giovanni Battista Gatti. Measurements: 46 x 31 cm.
