SEGUIDOR DE DIERIC BOUTS

(S. XV)

FOLLOWER OF DIERIC BOUTS Flanders (15th century) / (16th century) "Imago Salvatoris Coronati"

Oil on canvas. On the back, label of the Board of Delegates for the Protection and Rescue of Artistic Treasures (inventory no. 10116, provenance: Oliva, collection no.: 32). Provenance: - Collection of the Count of Oliva. Dieric Bouts created this image of Christ, which combines the iconography of the "Salvator Mundi" with that of the "Ecce Homo". It was a great success in its time and was repeated in his own workshop and also by his followers, often paired with the image of Our Lady of Sorrows, sometimes as a diptych. The face of Christ, with eyes reddened by suffering, executed in meticulous detail, displays the religious sentimentality and sensitivity characteristic of Bouts and the Flemish Primitives. It is presented in an important 19th-century Italian frame of inked bone and imitation tortoiseshell, based on the models of Giovanni Battista Gatti. Measurements: 46 x 31 cm.
