Lot 123
(Activo en el tercer cuarto del siglo XV)
MASTER OF BURGOS (Active in the third quarter of the 15th century) "Saint John the Baptist", "Saint Catherine of Alexandria" and "Saint Nicholas of Bari"
Three oil on panel paintings. Reference bibliography: - Miguel Ojeda, G., "An unknown painter from Burgos during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs", no. 116, Boletin de la Institucion FernAn GonzAlez; - Post, Chandler Rathfon., "A History of Spanish Painting, vol. 4 (The Hispano-Flemish Style in North-Western Spain)", no. 1, Harvard University Press, Cambridge (Massachusetts). These three panels attributed to the Master of Burgos, probably from the undersides or dust covers of a dismantled altarpiece, depict: Saint John the Baptist, with the Agnus Dei and dressed in a camel skin; Saint Catherine of Alexandria, with the sword of her martyrdom; and Saint Nicholas of Bari, dressed as a bishop and with the three resurrected children, in allusion to one of his well-known miracles. Very little is known about the biography and professional career of this painter, active in the third quarter of the 15th century, whose figures are characterized by a rough appearance and a certain rigidity in their movements, mixing influences from both Flemish painting, in their taste for detail and ornamentation, and Italian painting in their use of perspective. Dimensions: 50 x 20 cm each
