JUAN CORREA DE VIVAR (Mascaraque, Toledo, c. 1510 - Toledo,

Oil on panel. Provenance: Collection of the Counts of Cardona. Reference bibliography: Chandler Rathfon Post, "A History of Spanish Painting, Volume IX, part I, "The beginning of the Renaissance in Castile and Leon, Harvard University Press", 1847, p. 322, fig. 100; Ruiz Gomez, L., “Juan Correa de Vivar c.1510-1566. Master of the Spanish Renaissance”, exhibition catalog, Museo de Santa Cruz, Toledo, 2011. One of the most outstanding figures of Spanish Renaissance painting is Juan Correa de Vivar. Born in Toledo, he trained with the painter Juan de Borgoña and was also influenced by Pedro Berruguete. His paintings, as can be seen in this beautiful panel depicting the “Birth of Christ” or in its companion panel, the “Adoration of the Magi” (lot 189), demonstrate this in their meticulous and detailed drawing, their soft colors, and the delicacy of their figures. Dimensions: 83.5 x 54 cm.
