Oil on canvas Signed on the lower left. On the back, old label from the "JHSchwartz" collection with number 5980. Jose Nin y Tudo specialized in history subjects, mortuary portraits and gained a great reputation as a decorator of stately homes in Madrid and as a portraitist of politicians and painters of the time, such as Prim, Espartero, Eduardo Rosales, Emillio Castelar or Leon Gambetta, among others. In this line we find the present portrait of the progressive politician Praxedes Mateo-Sagasta (1825-1903), being a magnificent testimony of the well-deserved fame achieved by the painter in the Madrid society of the time.
