GIL DE ENCINAS Y TALLER

(Activo en Zamora en el primer tercio del siglo XVI)

GIL DE ENCINAS AND WORKSHOP (Active in Zamora in the first third of the 16th century) "Saint Bartholomew", "Saint Jerome", "Saint Catherine of Alexandria" and "Saint Sebastian", c. 1520

Four oil paintings on panel. Active in the city of Zamora during the first third of the 16th century, Gil de Encinas was known for a long time as the Master of the Zamora Choir Screen. He emerged from anonymity thanks to the discovery of documents linking him to the completion of the main altarpiece in the town of Horcajo de las Torres, in the province of Avila, although the bulk of his work is located in Zamora. Among his works, the half of the Gospel side of the dismantled altarpiece of Fuentelcarnero, on which he collaborated with other painters, stands out for its scale; however, his most important work is undoubtedly the panel of Christ in Majesty with Saints, located in the choir screen of Zamora Cathedral. The formal and technical characteristics of these four panels have led Dr. Fiz Fuertes to attribute them to this painter. In her detailed analysis, she notes that the workshop's influence is more evident in some than in others, but all constitute a fine example of the fusion of stylistic aspects from Flemish and Italian painting at the beginning of the 16th century. A study of the works by Dr. Irune Fiz Fuertes is attached. Dimensions: 58 x 40 cm each.
