Fang Nguil mask, Gabon, c. 1960
The Fang used masks in their secret societies. Ngil masks were used by members of a male society during the initiation of new members and the pursuit of wrongdoers. The elongated, large, kaolin-covered masks with a face that is generally heart-shaped and with a long, thin nose are well known.
