FRANCISCO PRADILLA Y ORTIZ Villanueva de Gallego (1848) / Madrid (1921) "Study of Sultana Aixa, for the Moor's Sigh", c. 1887

Oil on canvas Signed, titled and dedicated in the lower right corner: "Study for The Moor's Sigh / To the eminent Doctor Huertas / as a sign of friendship and gratitude / forever yours / F. Pradilla / Madrid 1894". Inventory number "166" in blank inscribed in a circle also in the lower right corner. According to Wifredo Rincon in the painter's monograph, this study for the mother of Abu'Abd Allah, king of Granada, known as Boabdil the Young King, must have been made around 1887, before the completion of The Moor's Sigh in 1892 for the commemoration of the 4th centenary of the Reconquest of Granada.
