FRANCISCO LACOMA Y FONTANET

(1778 / 1849)

FRANCISCO LACOMA Y FONTANET Barcelona (1778) / Passy, France (1849) "Portrait of Maria Luisa Carvajal-Vargas y Queralt"

Oil on canvas. Full-length portrait of the Countess of Altamira and Marchioness of Astorga upon her marriage to Vicente Pio Osorio de Moscoso y Ponce de Leon. Its execution must not be far removed from that of her marriage, which took place in 1821 at the Palace of Saint Andrew in Bordeaux. She was the daughter of Jose Miguel de Carvajal-Vargas and Manrique de Lara Polanco, 2nd Duke of Saint Charles. In this splendid portrait she sports the same hairstyle and is wearing the same long yellow dress as the extended bust portrait from the same collection (lot xx). In her hands she is holding a brightly coloured scarf, and on the table are some gloves and a fan. The painting is signed by Lacoma in three sections: on the card, on the letter, and in the lower left corner. Dimensions: 54.5 x 46 cm.
