Oil on canvas. Dated in the lower left corner: "Rome, March 6, 1842". On the back, attached to the frame, label of the Board for the Protection and Rescue of Artistic Treasures. Commercial stamp of "Venta Madrazo. Paintings. Drawings. Engravings". Handwritten inscription on paper, signed by Mariano de Madrazo: "Study painted in Rome in the / year 1842 by Federico de Madrazo / as an essay for the painting of / Don Pelayo, 1st King of Asturias / For the record, I sign it in Madrid / on April 1, 1924 / Mariano de Madrazo". Old numberings and chalk numberings from the records corresponding to the Board for the Protection and Rescue of Artistic Treasures. Provenance: Collection of the Dukes of Medina de las Torres. This beautiful, loosely executed, sketchy canvas in some parts is the preparatory study for Federico de Madrazo's 1842 painting of "Don Pelayo, First King of Asturias." It belongs to a private collection and is currently temporarily housed in the Museum of the Basilica of Covadonga. This work is considered the beginning of the collection of paintings of kings commissioned by Queen Isabella II, now housed in the Museo Nacional del Prado. Dimensions: 35.5 x 27.5 cm.
