ESCUELA VALENCIANA

(Fles. S. XVII)

VALENCIAN SCHOOL (17th century) "Virgin of the Forsaken" .

Oil on canvas. This interesting and ancient painting depicting the patron saint of Valencia belongs to the typology popularly known as "Clavario Virgins." These are devotional canvases that also served the function of commemorating the temporary stay of the venerated image in the home of a devotee. They depict the Virgin of the Forsaken according to her usual iconography, crowned, carrying the Child Jesus with the cross in one hand and a lily stick in the other, with the Holy Innocents at her feet. The work stands out for its considerable size, antiquity, technical quality, and the ornamental richness it presents in the representation of a large repertoire of jewels and votive offerings on her tunic. It was executed in the second half of the 17th century, and it is evident that its artist took into account the previous models of Tomas Yepes. Dimensions: . Measurements: 140 x 92 cm
