ESCUELA NAVARRA

NAVARRE SCHOOL ( / END OF THE 13TH CENTURY - EARLY 14TH CENTURY) "Virgin with Child"

Carved and polychromed wooden sculpture. The iconography represented is the "Sedes Sapientiae" or "Throne of Wisdom," widespread during the Romanesque and Gothic periods. The carving still exhibits a marked hieratic style, typical of the Romanesque, broken only by the Child's crossed legs, which lend it a certain naturalness, timidly indicating the beginning of the Gothic style. Based on its characteristics, it can be classified within the "Basque-Navarrese-Riojan" type established by Dr. Clara Fernandez-Ladreda, and compared with the Gothic carving in the National Archaeological Museum (inv. no. 2015/126/1) and with that in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (inv. no. 53.67). Dimensions: 72 x 34 x 18 cm
