GRANADA SCHOOL (17th century) "Child Jesus of the Passion"
Oil on canvas. On the back, attached to the frame, there is a label from the Board of Seizure, Protection and Salvage of Artistic Treasures. The photo library of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain holds an archive of this painting (Moreno Archive 03783_A). Provenance: Collection of Don Fernando Osorio de Moscoso, Duke of Medina de las Torres. The Child Jesus of the Passion was a recurring theme in Spanish Baroque painting, thanks to its perfect combination of the tenderness of Christ's childhood with the suffering of his future Passion. The Arma Christi always accompany the Divine Infant in this type of representation, as elements premonitory of the tragic outcome. The model, the type of brushstroke, the color palette used, and the precise technique of this painting lead us to associate it directly with the work of the painter Alonso Cano (1601-1667) or perhaps, more specifically, with one of his main followers, such as Juan de Sevilla (1643-1695). The work must have been well-known at the time because a painting has been found in a private collection that repeats exactly the same composition, although its quality is lower. Dimensions: 49 x 39.5 cm.
