ESCUELA FLAMENCA POSIBLEMENTE BRUSELAS

(S.XVIII)

FLEMISH SCHOOL POSSIBLY BRUSSELS (18TH - 19TH CENTURY) "Meleager hunting the Calydonian boar"

Woven wool tapestry The myth of the Calydonian boar has been widely depicted in art. Oeneus, king of Calydon, forgot to include Artemis in the annual offerings. Enraged, she sent a boar that destroyed the crops and terrorized the people. Oeneus summoned the best hunters in Greece, including his son Meleager and Atalanta, a skilled huntress rescued as a child by Artemis. Atalanta managed to wound the boar, and Meleager finished it off. This triggered a further series of incidents that ended with Meleager's death and Artemis's revenge. It has been modified.
