SPANISH SCHOOL (18th Century) "Portrait of Toribio de Velasco"

Oil on panel. On the reverse, an old handwritten inscription reads: "Toribio Velasco, founder / of [...] / native of San Pedro de Piñares / [...] / died 1730." Possibly idealized and inspired by depictions of Saint Paschal Baylon, the portrait represents Toribio de Velasco, a member of the Third Order of Saint Francis and founder of the "Toribio Children" of Seville, an association dedicated to the protection of orphaned and abandoned children. Exhibitions: On the reverse, an old, unidentified exhibition label is affixed to the panel. Dimensions: 35 x 26 cm.
