(1857 / 1925)

ATTRIBUTED TO EUGENIO OLIVA Y RODRIGO Palencia (1857) / Madrid (1925) "Death of the Centaur Nessus"

Oil on canvas. In 1888, the final round of the competitive examination for scholarship places at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome consisted of painting a canvas depicting the death of the centaur Nessus. The top three places were awarded to Eugenio Alvarez Dumont, Jose Garnelo and Enrique Simonet, in that order. Given its style, this beautiful painting may be the one produced by Eugenio Oliva for that competition. Measurements: 148 x 117 cm.
